Catholics are traditionally the most important swing vote in every Presidential election.
They were the original Reagan Democrats. They swung to Clinton in 1992. They pushed W over the finish line in 2000. They embraced Obama, narrowly broke for Trump in 2016 and went back to Biden in 2020.
They went for Biden because he said he was Catholic, but his Adminstration has been unrepentantly hostile to the Church despite Joe’s decent relationship with our liberal pontiff, Pope Francis.
But Kamala Harris a very different kettle of fish-eater.
She hates Catholics and the Catholic Church. I can reach no other conclusion.
That hostility to the Church is why Francis refused to endorse her. Same with the head of the Teamsters Union, which is dominated by Catholics.
When she declined to attend New York’s Al Smith Dinner, which celebrates the first Irish Catholic to win the Democratic nomination for the White House, she was sending a pretty strong signal: Go screw yourselves.
Harris is the first Presidential nominee to do a campaign event at an abortion clinic. Her whole campaign is based on making it as easy to get an abortion as it is to get a Big Mac at McDonalds.
This is problematic for the Catholic Church, which still believes, despite political pressure, that killing innocent little babies is not only bad public policy but is deeply immoral (put your rosary beads away, Nancy Pelosi).
Harris, when she was a Senator, led the attack on the Knights of Columbus, the leading Catholic fraternal and charitable organization. She asked one judicial nominee, who happened to be a Knight did you know, “that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when [he] joined the organization.” She questioned whether he agreed with then-Supreme Knight Carl Anderson that abortion is “the killing of the innocent on a massive scale.” She asked him whether he knew “that the Knights of Columbus opposed marriage equality when [he] joined the organization.”
In 2016, when she was the Attorney General of California, she harassed pro-life activists, raiding the home of David Daleiden. The raid was in response to Daleiden’s undercover investigation of Planned Parenthood, which showed organization officials discussing costs for fetal tissue and body parts. It is illegal to sell fetal tissue and body parts. But Harris didn’t investigate Planned Parenthood, who was clearly breaking the law. She prosecuted the person who uncovered the crime.
Also in California, she led the effort to regulate pro-life speech in a law called the Reproductive Fact Act, a law that was eventually ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
She was one of 14 Attorney Generals who filed an Amicus brief in support of Obama Administration efforts to make Hobby Lobby provide its employee’s health insurance that includds abortion drugs. She has been on the leading edge of lawmakers who have demanded that states pay for gender reassignment surgery and other pro-trans policies. She also fought hard to end religious exemptions for organizations like the Little Sisters of the Poor, who do not support abortion policies.
Harris has a long history of anti-Catholic activism, and should she get elected to the White House, she would be the most anti-Catholic President since Woodrow Wilson.
Catholics make up huge percentage of voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, up to 25 percent of voters. Earlier this year, a poll showed that Donald Trump enjoyed a 17% edge over Joe Biden among Catholic voters in seven critical swing states, and Biden branded himself as a church-going Catholic. That was one of the factors that led leading Democrats to dump Joe. Catholics are the swing vote in 5 of the 7 swing states.
My guess is most Catholic voters don’t truly realize how hostile Harris is to the church. If Trump can let voters know her record, he will win the election. Harris hates Catholics. That’s the bottom line. And hopefully her hatred for Catholics will be her downfall this election.
As a Catholic, I don't feel Harris is anti-Catholic at all. I think it's a mad world where one candidate is deemed pro-Catholic because he appointed three Catholic justices on one one hand while being a serial philanderer. I'm not sure he's read the Sermon on the Mount or "The New Colossus." At best, I would argue they are equally suspicious in terms of being pro-Catholic. Not all Catholics are single-issues votes although I'm married to one. Some care about the poor, immigrants, gun safety, and capital punishment. 25 Matthew stuff. I think she's avoiding the Al Smith dinner because he's going to beat his chest about the SCOTUS picks and there's nothing to be gained. Take the L and move on.
